Sue Laue
SEL Specialist
Sue is a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Trainer and Curriculum Designer for PreK-12 schools in Chicago and the suburbs. She is CEO and Lead Trainer for her company, SEL Behavioral Solutions PreK-12. Since 2007, Sue has trained & coached principals, teachers and staff at over 40 schools to facilitate SEL culture change through strategic planning and wide-ranging curriculum alignment with the Illinois SEL goals and standards.
Her work has assisted schools to nurture positive student behavior, mental health, conflict resolution,bullying prevention and increases in academic gains. Sue has coached schools on Second Step and Lions Quest SEL curriculum programs, the use of Peace Circles, restorative practices, and she has conducted adult/parent SEL and bullying prevention training. Currently, Sue is a consultant for Open Studio Project in Evanston, a creative art instruction nonprofit. She has designed OSP’s SEL and Art Curriculum programs for students PreK-12 by aligning the IL SEL standards with the IL visual arts standards. She also trains educators for OSP on social and emotional learning instruction for students and how to implement the new SEL and Art Curriculum. Another project has been creating and writing high school SEL lessons for the Lions Quest SEL curriculum. Sue also was a consultant at Columbia College Chicago for Columbia Links, a leadership and journalism program for Chicago high school students to learn news literacy, reporting and SEL skills, giving voice to their concerns growing up in inner-city neighborhoods. Students also wrote, "Don't Shoot. I Want to Grow Up," a magazine collection of essays on violence. Sue developed new SEL and journalism lessons used in the Links program. Prior to that time, she facilitated focus groups on neighborhood violence and drug use for the University of Illinois-Chicago, School of Public Health. Sue was a Chicago Tribune reporter from 1996 to 2007, writing for the North Shore Watch Column. She also owns Media Masters Inc., a firm of consultants specializing in communication, marketing, community & media relations and strategic planning in the fields of education, public health, transportation and environmental justice. Sue has served the Chicago Foundation for Education (CFE) as a Board member specializing in grant review and approval for innovative, teacher-led projects including SEL. As Past President of Mental Health America of the North Shore (MHANS) Board of Directors, she led a re-imagining of the nonprofit’s vision toward social and emotional learning for all individuals. Sue holds a master’s degree in journalism and media management from Northwestern University, a master’s degree in Community Environmental Planning from the University of Kentucky and a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Journalism from Illinois State University.
