SEL Training Intensive
Open Studio Project has developed a process-oriented curriculum for creative arts education aligned with Illinois SEL and visual arts standards which support student social and emotional development. OSP is one of the first art-based organizations in Illinois to develop an evidence-based curriculum incorporating a creative methodology and SEL and visual arts goals for all students, including those with communication disorders, autism, and special needs.
Participants of the curriculum explore and develop stronger skills in creative art expression while learning the skills for self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship-building and responsible decision-making.
Go in-depth with our evidence based social-emotional learning art curriculum. Train directly with the curriculum authors, practitioners, and art therapists working in Chicago-area schools. Learn all about the OSP SEL philosophy, goals, and outcomes.
Day-by-Day Overview of the OSP SEL Training Intensive
Day 1: Overview of SEL in the OSP Process
Experience an in-depth introduction to Social Emotional Learning and its integration into the Open Studio Process. Learn about the data, tools, and lessons involved in our SEL curriculum, and participate in a first-hand experience with one of our introductory projects from our K-8th grade curriculum.
Day 2: SEL & Art with Kindergarten through 8th Grade Students
Learn about the Open Studio Project SEL Curriculum for grades K-8 through the guided completion of two projects from our curriculum booklet. With one project focusing on drawing & painting, and the other focusing on 3D collage & assemblage, you will gain insight into how various materials influence the social-emotional impact of the Open Studio Process. You will learn from our Lead Children’s Facilitator, Jan Ellenstein, about the development and intent of our K-8 curriculum as she sheds light on her extensive experiences bringing each of the included projects to public schools throughout the Chicagoland area.
Day 3: SEL, Art, & Mental Heath with High School Students
Discover the profound influence that social-emotional learning can have on the mental health & wellness of adolescents with this overview of our high school SEL curriculum. Lead by two of our art therapists, Maira Egan and Emma Zbiral-Teller, you will see the adaptability and flexibility of our art-based SEL projects while they guide you through two art interventions from this curriculum: Clay Workshop: Release a Sculpture and Banner Workshop: Say It Out Loud. Over the course of these workshops, our art therapists will share their experiences implementing these projects in high schools for various demographics in both Evanston and Chicago public high schools. This day of the training will touch on adaptations, accommodations, and alterations of projects in the curriculum depending on setting and group demographics.
