MARCH

Tulips: a father's perspective
Opening Reception
Friday, March 7th, 5:30 - 9pm
"On the unseasonably warm night of March 16, 2007, a young African American man was murdered on his way to a friend's house on the south side of Chicago. He was brutally beaten and shot 14 times in the back by three strangers. To law enforcement, he was Richard Wright's invisible man. To me, he was my son and the brother to my daughters. I loved him with the fierceness only parents truly know, and I believe his life was worth something." - Maurice Murray Sr., artist and father
As we approach the first anniversary of his son's death, Maurice shares his grieving process as expressed not through words or tears, but through a collection of paintings devoted to tulips. Stoic and isolated, Maurice has spent most of the past several months in the company of camera, canvas and oil, exploring not the femininity of flowers as have so many artists and poets, but the innocence of youth, sudden death and rebirth as captured in tulips. In his work, Maurice recalls his son's life, as well as the circumstance and chance that crossed paths on that fatal night.
